No Regard Presidential Previews: Oklahoma City Thunder (Teddy Roosevelt)

Oh the season. Oh the season! Election or NBA, both are upon us. We're getting into the spirit by bringing you our season previews (with a little help from the presidents). One per day for the next 30 days—which will bring us to the Day of Reckoning. So please join us on the campaign trail as we shake hands, kiss babies and sink jumpers.

“Believe you can and you're halfway there.” - Theodore Roosevelt

An irrepressible, trust-busting, 42-year-old Rough Rider took office upon the assassination of William McKinley. Believing in a policy of walking softly and carrying a big stick, President Theodore Roosevelt issued a corollary to the Monroe Doctrine intended to exercise international policy power whenever necessary. The world was officially on notice.

The young, confident, occasionally belligerent Thunder came out of nowhere, have taken their lumps and are in this thing for the long haul. New challenges await in the west and a Finals return is not a given. Just as the original Bull Moose gave a 90 minute speech while bleeding through his shirt mere minutes after taking a bullet to the chest, Durant, Westbrook and Harden took to London shortly after their heartbreaking Finals loss and returned wearing gold (no thanks to their buddy Serge Ibaka, who took silver playing for Spain, despite being from the Republic of Congo, go figure). The Thunder are not scared of anything or anyone, and the return of Eric Maynor, as well as the absolute steal of Perry Jones, III in the draft could provide the additional firepower necessary to defeat the Lakers in what we can go ahead and assume will be an epic seven-game Western Conference Finals.

As one of only two current NBA contenders (the other being the Spurs) that was actually built through the draft, the Thunder provide a fascinating longitudinal study of what a team should look like when organically constructed. Durant, Westbrook, Harden and Ibaka have been together for three playoff runs of increasing length, and their ability to play together has improved noticeably each season. There is one final step left, but the road looks more difficult than ever. Will the rough riding Thunder break through the increasingly crowded field? Will Kevin Durant finally hoist a Podoloff trophy? Will Russell Westbrook stop dressing like his sole purpose is to confuse old people? (No, he probably won't.)

Rushed Pull-Up Jumpers

Pokemon who the team should adopt as its new mascot: Pikachu

Headline we'll be most sick of reading: "Are Durant and Westbrook on the Same Page?"

Headline we're most looking forward to: "James Harden Shaves Beard, Visits Orthodontist"

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you enter the pearly gates?: "My, you fellas have certainly grown."

Why You Should Root For The Thunder: Everything Dies

"My next year is now." - William Gates

This is about Kevin Durant.

The first time I thought about death thorough enough to have a breakdown I was probably around 11. The panic was spurred by the "Make Your Own Time Capsule" book I had been reading. It took me a few minutes, but all of a sudden I was hit with eternity. When the time capsule would finally be opened, however many hundred years in the future, I would not be. There, then not there. One moment, next moment.

Things change for good, quickly. And how! I've attended enough funerals to know how these things work. The floor can drop out any second, and it relishes in doing so.

Yeah, I know. This is a Website about the NBA, so here you go...

No Regard Preview: The Myth Can Overwhelm

One Game We Will Definitely Watch Tonight: Portland Trailblazers vs. Oklahoma City Thunder

You have to assume that the Trailblazers probably put a lot of thought into who they were going to take with the first pick of the 2007 NBA draft. I envision an entire team of analysts bustling around a Willy Wonka-esque lab, filling beakers and peering through microscopes to determine who would be a better fit for their franchise. In this probably-pretty-close-to-real-life scenario, I am going to hypothesize there were certain members of their committee who very much pushed to draft Oden over KD: "Big men like him don't come around very often. He's the next Tim Duncan, but a better shot-blocker."

No matter how hard the Durant camp pushed with articulate arguments, great data and sound logic, the Oden people refused to budge from their mindless trope: "You just can't pass up on big men like him in the draft. It's not every year someone with his size comes around, you know."

The Oden proponents were relentless in their pursuit: "It's a no-brainer when it comes to big men and the draft, you simply have no choice."

In the end, the Odenites and their big man argument won out. They popped champagne and toasted to the future the Trailblazers: "Here's to the next 20 years in Portland. We just drafted the best big man of all time. Can you say 'dynasty?'" They spent the rest of the night drinking and talking about how great it was to have a dominate big man in a league where there are so few: "They just don't come around very often in the modern game."

When MVP candidate Kevin Durant runs into the gym in his fresh OKC warmups tonight, I imagine the Oden people will look at each other, sigh, and remark: "I stand by our decision. Dominate seven-footers don't grow on trees."They're right: They sure do not.

One Game We Definitely Will Not Watch Tonight: Washington Wizards vs. Toronto Raptors
No offense to John Wall, Rudy Fernandez or any of the other players competing in this game tonight, but I'd be a lot more interested in tuning in if we were watching actual wizards play actual raptors. Also, I'm aware that Harry is fighting a dragon in this picture above, so you don't need to mention the inaccuracies of the photo. It's the closest thing to a wizard fighting a raptor I could find on the Internet. I expected better also.

Question of the Day

Last night's Monday Night Football contest was notable to the staff here only because it matched up the two sweetheart teams of the two best players in the NBA: LeBron and Durant. And thanks to Twitter, we found out the two gentlemen wagered on the game. Unfortunately, they didn't disclose the terms publicly. The only hint we have is one cryptic, gloating tweet from James: "I'll be expecting my package on my doorstep in the a.m @KDTrey5. Thank u sir. Nice doing business with u. Haa."

It's been bothering us all day: What the hell is in that package?

2011 No Regard Playoff Power Rankings

The 2011 NBA Playoffs are over. All of the teams and players are dead except for the Dallas Mavericks. But that doesn't mean we can't reminisce about the joy they brought us a scant two months ago. Thus, the 2011 No Regard Playoff Power Rankings.

Feel free to voice your displeasure with our rankings in the comments section, but just know our algorithm is German engineered. And you know how they do.

25. Brian Cardinal
We literally didn't know this dude existed until we saw him boxing some Miami Heat players. We're still not convinced he's not a ghost.

NBA Middle Names: Kevin Durant

We at No Regard spend a lot of time in our NBA knitting circles trying to figure out the human side of these players. Whether it's musing about their commutes to work, how much "Call of Duty" they play, or what their favorite snack food is, we like to remind ourselves that NBA players are nothing more than young men with enviable jobs. What better way to humanize our heroes than look up their middle names?

No Regard Daily Recap: 10-27-10

One Game We Watched Last Night: Oklahoma City Thunder Vs. Chicago Bulls

Chicago: 95 Thunder: 106

The night, as predicted, belonged to the stars that shined in Turkey this summer for team USA. Durant, Rose and Westbrook were all brilliant in a game that was fast paced, exciting to watch, and full of high-flying offense. KD and Westbrook's combined 58 points led the Thunder to their first win of the season, but Rose's penetration, finishing around the basket, and silly-precise passing didn't make things easy for OKC's version of Batman and Robin. The avid fan should feel more than satisfied with this game after watching young, humble stars put on a show during prime time. And the casual fan got to witness plenty of play above the rim. Here are a few observations that stood out for me:

Game We Will Definitely Watch Tonight: Chicago Bulls Vs. Oklahoma City Thunder

There is a lot on the line for the NBA's new golden boy, Kevin Durant, this season. He's been the recent recipient of some serious praise by fans and experts alike, as many believe that Durant will not only repeat as the NBA's leading scorer, but will also be the league's MVP. After watching his effort this summer, I'm inclined to agree with these arguments. Durant's the real deal Holyfield. And he's got the work ethic and attitude to dominate this year and beyond. I'll be a kid in a candy shop tonight getting my first look at him in an OKC uniform since losing to LA in six last year.

The New Big Three?

Kelly Dwyer raises a very good point about the cover of Sports Illustrated's NBA preview issue:

Weird, right?! If I had to guess, I'd say that Russell Westbrook was busy studying up on Obama's tax policy and James Harden was combing his beard.

Love the cover nonetheless.

MVPreseason

So I think we're all pretty confident that Kevin Durant is indeed going to be the indisputable number one fantasy player this year. But now we're talking a whole different ballgame!

So let's put this new conversation up for discussion: Should KD also be the consensus preseason pick for MVP? Or do you think that most of these GMs are just spitting back the sour grapes LeBron stuffed down their throats this summer?

Personally, I think the GMs are right. LeBron simply won't be as "valuable" to the Heat as he ever was to Cleveland. Miami would be a very, very good team with D-Wade (provided he's healthy), Bosh, and the rest of the supporting cast they've assembled. And while LeBron certainly takes the team to another level, they would be in decent shape without him.

Think about the Thunder without Durant. As much as I love Westbrook, Jeff Green and James Harden, a KD-less OKC isn't winning more than 25 games. In the coming years, he will lead the Thunder into the elite tier of title contenders, and this season stands to serve as the moment when that process really picks up steam.

This blog is certainly no stranger to drinking the Kevin Durant juice (get your mind out of the gutter), and while I don't want to stoke the flames of unrealistic expectations, this outpouring of GM love doesn't hurt the idea that in 2010-2011, we're all going to Witness a change in the MVP landscape.

Fantasy Voyage: So it Begins

If you hadn't already guessed it, we here at No Regard are pretty heavy into fantasy basketball. Throughout the season, we'll take the occasional moment to ignore real-life NBA implications and take a look at things from an IFL (In Fantasy Life) perspective.

For this first edition of Fantasy Voyage, we'd like to throw a question out there: Should Kevin Durant be the unanimous #1 pick going into this season? We're pretty positive he's got the scoring title on lock, but do LeBron's new surrounding weapons make him an even more dangerous fantasy option? What about CP3 and Kobe?

If you are fortunate enough to get that top spot, what are you doing?

Earning Those Cheetos

Semi-Finals, baby! Team USA bested Russia behind inspired efforts from OKC's finest today in Turkey. Westbrook came up with steal after steal and was able to fly to the rim for some powerful finishes and KD was deadly as usual on the offensive end for the red, white and blue.

The Russians battled in the first half, keeping the game close with offensive rebounding and solid jump-shooting, but they could not find an answer to America's gambling defense during the 3rd quarter. It was a dominating half for the Yanks. Looking ahead, they potentially face a piping-hot Luis Scola-led Argentina team in a game that awards the winner a spot in the finals of this tournament.

Two more wins and Lady Liberty proves once again that basketball's international crown rightfully belongs to the United States of America. Enjoy those cheesy snacks, Westbrook; you burned off those calories, man.

Slippery When Wet

Eric Gordon made it rain yesterday. All over these hoes. Well not "these hoes" so much as Tunisian basketball players but the imagery still works. Sort of. Seriously though, Gordon sizzled draining multiple 3 pointers and finishing the game with 21 points as the USA cruised to an easy victory over Tunisia. I hope Coach K was taking notes for the future.

Onto the knock-out stage of the tournament where much tougher foes await like Spain and Greece. Will KD, Rose and Duke's Head Coach do enough to lead our heroes to FIBA immortality, or will Minnesota's lost boy carry Spain to international basketball triumph?

We'll just have to tune in to find out. How lucky are we to get to see the smile pictured below playing in one-and-done basketball games in early September?

Weekend Edition: Nenad Jailed, Thunder Sound Off

Oklahoma City Thunder Center Nenad Krstic, generally known for his jumpshot and aversion to physical contact, spent last night in jail after throwing a chair in a brawl that erupted during an international game between Serbia and Greece.

The Thunder met their demise this post season due to their lack of a true big man. Krstic's tenure with the Thunder has been regarded as a stopgap, a space-filler until the team can develop one of their young Centers. We've offered a few ideas for them, but so far none have taken. So at 8.4 points and 5 rebounds per game, Nenad Krstic remains their man. A Krstic suspension could spell bad news for the young guns of OKC. The Thunder have plenty to say about Nenad's brawl. Here are some highlights:

Official Summer OMG

We could just link you over to SLAM so you could watch this hot as shit video of Kevin Durant sonning the entire world down at DC's Goodman League. But we really want this video on our website. Because Kevin Durant is The Best, and we hope that Prop 8 stays repealed so we can marry his game on a beach in Santa Cruz, just like we've always dreamed (blogs marrying basketball skill sets is gay, right?).

Team Dreamin' 2011: THUNDER

At No Regard, we love basketball. We love the spectacle and strategy of the game, but sometimes the league's lack of imagination confounds and disappoints us. Call us optimists, visionaries, or kids who watched too much Space Jam, but we have ideas. Damn are we gonna share 'em.

The Thunder found near-immediate success settling into Oklahoma City; that which can't be credited directly to Kevin Durant's instant superstardom certainly goes to a young bench teeming with raw talent.

Watching a Thunder game this season guarantees three things:

1) KD and Russell Westbrook continuing to blossom before your eyes.
2) A host of rising stars jockeying to position themselves around Kid Delish and Jet Zero.
3) A gargantuan and vacuous black hole at the 5-spot, a position the front office seems intent to never actually fill.

The Thunder need more guards like Peyton Manning needs another endorsement deal. Ignoring the need for big men troubled them all season. Surrendering the paint buried them in the playoffs. Do we have ideas for them? Of course we do.

Consider the above photo. Pick out who is the most bored and who is the craftiest guy there. Easy, right? Bored goes to Nick Collison (Lower Left, Napping). Craftiest goes to James Harden (Top Back Right, Suit).

James, Nick, can you guys come over here for a second? Hey fellas, have you ever seen Freak the Mighty?

Perfect. Here’s what we’re gonna do…
