There is a lot on the line for the NBA's new golden boy, Kevin Durant, this season. He's been the recent recipient of some serious praise by fans and experts alike, as many believe that Durant will not only repeat as the NBA's leading scorer, but will also be the league's MVP. After watching his effort this summer, I'm inclined to agree with these arguments. Durant's the real deal Holyfield. And he's got the work ethic and attitude to dominate this year and beyond. I'll be a kid in a candy shop tonight getting my first look at him in an OKC uniform since losing to LA in six last year.
Chicago, though, has it's own player that sizzled in Turkey this summer. Derrick Rose showed that he's an offensive juggernaut and that his quickness off the dribble is virtually un-guardable. Sadly, we won't get to see the new-look Chicago Bulls in full form with Boozer out for the start of the year after breaking his hand because he tripped over a bag in his house (Boozer, more like boozin'). But we do get to see the head coaching debut of Tom Thibodeau, defensive mastermind. Can he bring the defensive grittiness that made Boston so successful to the Windy City?
Don't forget about the second bananas in this game, either. Both of them are passionate and very talented. Russell Westbrook is looking at a career year and Joakim Noah combines pure heart and hustle with legitimate skillful play. This should be close throughout.
One Game We Probably Won't Watch Tonight: Minnesota Timberwolves Vs. Sacramento Kings
Please don't take this the wrong way because there are some intriguing aspects of this game that will certainly be worth watching. But let's be frank here: it's the second night of the season and the schedule is chock full of other games that I'm freaking out about.
There may come a time, in the near future, that I freak out about Kings games, though. This game sparks the inception of the Cousins-Evans era in Sacramento. For a franchise that hasn't had much to root for since C-Webb and our own Mike Bibby were running the show, this has to be very encouraging. Evans is already dynamic on the NBA level and Cousins is a raw, athletic talent that will possibly make a big splash in the NBA this year.
Oh god, if Rubio was just more open minded about the joys of Minnesota winters and was playing tonight? That second game would be a must watch. Also: Cheer up, Demarcus! You always look so sad.
