It has been a while since I last thought about LeBron James. I mean, yeah sure, I've read about him, I've talked about him, but for over a month I have not thought about him. I haven't pondered him, haven't measured the weight of what he means to me and to this sport.
The ongoing obsession with America's most popular unemployed guy has left me desensitized, or perhaps I should say over-sensitized. Yesterday I found myself languishing on a couch, distraught over news that Rudy Gay and Joe Johnson had resigned with mediocre teams for a bajillion dollars each. Why? I don't know. Sure, Johnson helped my fantasy team and Gay can jump really high, but the Grizzlies are a mess and the Hawks are the worst. Why do I care if they follow their money down a dead end street?
I was told to I was supposed to. Free agency is everything. The moves made now alter history. They change cities and build dynasties. For weeks I've been imagining which city LeBron James,über celebrity could land in while my image of LeBron James, basketball player has melted into a glob of stat lines and gossip photos. I've forgotten what we were making a fuss over. I'd lost sight of the awesome.
Offseason fatigue is treacherous. It is easy to forget what we're here for. The above video reminds us.
This is not to say that I don't care where LeBron lands. The potential July 3rd announcement of King James's Reign in New Jersey is the only possible event that could top Will Smith giving the world Independence Day on my tenth birthday. But perhaps after watching a video like this one, I care where he lands a little less. I'll be watching.
