NBA Middle Names: Al Horford

We at No Regard spend a lot of time in our NBA knitting circles trying to figure out the human side of these players. Whether it's musing about their commutes to work, how much "Call of Duty" they play, or what their favorite snack food is, we like to remind ourselves that NBA players are nothing more than young men with enviable jobs. What better way to humanize our heroes than look up their middle names?

No Regard Presidential Previews: Atlanta Hawks (Jimmy Carter)

Oh the season. Oh the season! Election or NBA, both are upon us. We're getting into the spirit by bringing you our season previews (with a little help from the presidents). One per day for the next 30 days—which will bring us to the Day of Reckoning. So please join us on the campaign trail as we shake hands, kiss babies and sink jumpers.

“It is that unique self-definition which has given us an exceptional appeal, but it also imposes on us a special obligation, to take on those moral duties which, when assumed, seem invariably to be in our own best interests.” - Jimmy Carter

I once worked on the ad sales/marketing side of an ancient magazine going through a “rebranding,” so I’ve heard plenty of talk in my time on “destroying expectations,” “engaging with a new audience” and “changing perceptions.”

Jimmy Carter, perhaps more than any other president, has utilized those principles in his post-POTUS life to create a new image of his legacy that trumps the notions that had existed before. When he exited the White House after one term in 1981, Carter was seen by a majority of Americans as an ineffective leader, one who couldn’t handle the rigors of dealing with challenges like the Iran hostage crisis and an economic downturn. But since that time, Carter has seen a great deal of success with his humanitarian efforts—starting the Carter Center to encourage democracy and peaceful political resolutions, and winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. By focusing his life after presidency on the idealistic goals he couldn’t gain Congressional support for in office, he has essentially rebranded himself as a hero of the center-left—a peacemaker and all-around good dude—thereby replacing the vision of failure many Americans had of him (and that many conservatives still do). His name is no longer synonymous with “ineffectiveness.” It is synonymous with “compassion” and “goodwill.”

Like Jimmy Carter, the Atlanta Hawks are currently primed for a reinvention that will change everything you know about them. For years, they have been seen as underachievers, a team that has always been good enough for a top four playoff seed but that lacks the competitive fire to truly ever get anything done. This offseason, by shipping Joe Johnson to Brooklyn, the Hawks made a gesture both symbolic and potentially effectual. Johnson was the embodiment of the Hawks spirit: a six-time All Star who could never quite achieve household name status and whose peak lay just below the line that separates good from great.

Now, the Hawks find themselves with somewhat of a blank slate and the pieces to turn the mundane into the sublime. Josh Smith was an absolute monster on both ends of the floor last year; indeed, his season was criminally underrated by the world at large. When he was on, it was really something special to watch. Smith is now the undisputed star of this team, and if he can continue to perform at the level he was at six months ago, he may truly blossom into one of the very best frontcourt players in the league. It won’t hurt that he has a young, exciting point guard who can run the floor with him in Jeff Teague. Teague has a lot of work left in proving he can be consistent during the regular season, but he has shown flashes during the playoffs of being able to direct an offense and make big guard plays as well as any other point in the league.

Helping Smith and Teague will be a healthy-for-now Al Horford and a newly acquired pair of long-range specialists, Kyle Korver and Anthony Morrow. These are two guys who the Hawks won’t be able to trust for 35 minutes a game, but when they’re on the court, they will spread the defense in a way the team hasn’t been able to do in recent years.

Of course, most people would probably say this is a worse Hawks team than the one that battled the Celtics this past spring. Johnson, although frustratingly on the eternal brink of next-leveldom, was the most consistent scorer the team had, their undisputed best offensive player. So those people are probably right. This is a team that will not make the playoffs as easily as it is used to. But the hope is, if they do indeed make the playoffs, they will use the opportunity to show a new passion and an excitingness and attitude that not only gets them to the second round, but recasts them in the eyes of underwhelmed fans.

If the Hawks can steal a seat atop the fire currently lighting the asses of their city’s football team, they may match their previous winning records—and may do so in a way that makes the world think differently about them. It is now up to them to invoke Georgia’s proudest son and reinvent themselves as a team that accomplishes big, exciting things on a national stage. It’s time to actively change the conversation and build a new reputation.

Rushed Pull-Up Jumpers

Pokemon who the team should adopt as its new mascot: Fearow

Headline we’ll be most sick of reading: “Josh Smith continues being great, but is he elite?”

Headline we’re most looking forward to: “DeShawn Stevenson gets Abraham Lincoln neck tattoo changed to Jimmy Carter neck tattoo after being disappointed by Spielberg film”

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you enter the pearly gates?: “This is better than the All-Star Game anyway, isn’t it, Josh?”

No Regard Recaps: Ain't Over 'Til It Ain't Over

One Game We Watched Last Night: Atlanta Hawks vs. Boston Celtics

Hawks: 87, Celtics: 86

Al Horford and his freshly healed pectoral muscle is starting to become a real thorn in the side of the Boston Celtics. Horford's emotional return is more than just fluff, in fact, as it was his big body that prevented Rondo from getting up a potential game-winning shot on the final play.

Speaking of Rondo, I love that he shoots threes now. You know who else made a three last night? Kevin Garnett!

You know who can't shoot threes? Ryan Hollins. But he can provide some serious energy minutes off the bench. Boy, that guy loves being out there on the basketball court in a Celtics uniform.

What else, what else? Oh yeah, how come Walter Ray Allen misses foul shots now? Not okay.

One Game We Didn't Watch Last Night: Orlando Magic vs. Indiana Pacers

Magic: 87, Pacers: 105

This was probably Stan Van's last game as head coach of the Orlando Magic. Or it wasn't, we'll never know. So even though we didn't watch, we did make sure to tune into his post-game presser because that's where SVG shines magnificent. He didn't disappoint. As one reporter introduced the premise that this past season was tough for Van Gundy both on and off the court, SVG interrupted. He said that wasn't true, that the past year has been good for him off the court because his wife likes him most of the time.

Goodnight Stan.

No Regard Recaps: Tebow Time!

One Game We Watched Last Night: Atlanta Hawks vs. Boston Celtics

Celtics: 87 Hawks: 80

This victory proved the perfect example of how quickly momentum can shift in an NBA playoff serious. (This is a new thing we're trying: Calling a hotly contested, gravely important series a "serious." Let us know if you like/don't it!) Prior to tip, the Cs were down and out, missing Rondo, Ray Ray, and facing a potential 2-0 deficit headed back to New England. Now, thanks to tenacious defense and a vintage Paul Pierce performance, the Green and White are primed to take down the Hawks in a short series.

Avery Bradley continued his giant strides as a professional by providing stellar ball pressure on Jeffrey Demarco, particularly in the fourth quarter. When needed most, he competently handled the offense and found open shooters. As for The Truth, well it's clear that Boston's all-time leading scorer was on a mission—almost as if to say, "I used to win playoff series without any teammates before, you know?"  Even more importantly, he put a stamp on the game after wetting some clutch fourth quarter buckets and Tebowing. This celebration was definitely the most critical decision he's made all season.

Larry Drew and court general J. Demarco will look to rally the troops in the coming days before they head north for game three. They need to find a way to more consistently unlock Beantown's stifling defense. They also might want to consider Tebowing themselves so we can really heat this thing up. Just sayin'.

One Game We Didn't Watch Last Night: Chicago Bulls vs. Philadelphia 76ers

Bulls: 92 Sixers: 109

It's hard to stomach this series with D-Rose sidelined by a horrible knee injury. I definitely watched the first half, though, so while Chicago may struggle to score in later rounds without last season's MVP, they should be fine to get past Philly, right? I mean, I did not catch the second half, but surely their huge lead was enough to silence the haters and critics who suggest the Bulls have no shot at a title without Rose, right? They had a decent record in the regular season when he was MIA! They are built on crashing the boards and defending, Rose won't be missed here!

Sorry? Hmm? Oh really?

Sigh... this is awkward now.

The Confidence Interval of the Atlanta Hawks

It must be a great time to be a Hawks fan. They finally bested big brother Orlando in convincing fashion, Dominique Wilkins is fist pumping quite frequently in the stands, and Joe Johnson is wetter than the Thunder Canyon water ride at Dorney Park. Not to mention last night's thievery of home-court advantage against Chicago, in a game that was never really in contention. After a few years of pathetic playoff performances, this team appears ready to take the Bulls to the brink.

No Regard Daily Recap: Broken Promises, Happy Surprises

One Game We Watched Last Night Even Though We Told You We'd Watch Something Else: Oklahoma City Thunder vs. New Jersey Nets

Thunder: 123, Nets: 120 (3OT)

I was honestly excited for the Grizzlies-Hawks game. When Adam said those sorts of games are pretty much what we're about, I nodded silently but vigorously in my cubicle. Unfortunately, I didn't watch one second of said matchup. I was too busy detoxing in the Nets-Thunder triple overtime holistic sauna.

No Regard Daily Preview: Beasts of Land and Air

One Game We Will Definitely Watch Tonight: Memphis Grizzlies vs. Atlanta Hawks

In a lot of ways, this is the exact kind of game we had in mind when we decided to do a feature spotlighting one matchup each night. Some games feature two high profile teams with major star power (see tonight’s alternate game of Orlando vs. Chicago), and these games are often amazing to watch. Other games feature two down-in-the-dumps squads who are playing merely for pride, and these games often produce a sort of human drama that we enjoy greatly. But this kind of game—the kind that features two teams that are competitive but not elite, two teams with exciting players who are not quite household names, two teams that are likely to be fighting for a playoff spot come April—is sort of what we live for.

No Regard Daily Preview: 21 Minutes Out of Your Day

One Game We Will Definitely Watch Tonight: Atlanta Hawks vs. New Jersey Nets

Terrence, you don't need to tell us: Most of the No Regard staffers will be on a train by 6:00 pm tonight and at the Prudential Center by 6:19 pm, sans donuts. It's a field trip, kids, and permission slips have been collected.

With Prokhorov in attendance, expect a strong effort from the Nets against this reeling Hawks team. (When the boss walks by your cubicle, don't you give a little more effort?) Not a game the Nets should win, necessarily, but close to it. Points of emphasis:
  • If Horford and Favors match up at any point, consider it a dissertation in rebounding. Favors is more athletic, but Horford's positioning skills are supreme.
  • Lopez has been harangued recently, by coach and media alike, for being too soft. Any interaction with the always-testy Zaza Pachulia should inject him with a bit of much needed vigor, as Pachulia seems to piss off pretty much anyone he's ever matched up against.
  • Devin Harris is going to be handful for either Mike Bibby or young Jeff Teague; he's too fast for the former, too crafty for the latter. Now replace "Mike Bibby" with "Anthony Morrow" and "Jeff Teague" with "Terrence Williams"; that's the situation the Nets will face in Joe Johnson.
  • Our drinking game for the Hawks-Mavs game from this past weekend can easily be adapted here. Most of the rules were about the Hawks anyway. Updating the one about Mark Cuban for this game is just too perfect. Drink up!

One Game We Probably Won't Watch Tonight: Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Indiana Pacers

I promise we'll watch the Pacers one day soon, and it would make sense to start paying attention to them after their rout of the Miami Heat in South Beach last night. But this screams let-down game to me. And anyway, after we get back home from the game tonight, we're not going to have this on our DVRs—we're going to be watching judge shows.

No Regard Weekend Preview: Get Drunk With Mike Bibby

If you are a regular reader of this blog, you may remember a feature we started this offseason, NBA Happy Hour. In this Friday feature we presented a drinking game, giving readers the opportunity to get drunk while, let's say, watching the FIBA championship game, by giving them certain things to look for and celebrate. We are now carrying this idea over to our weekend previews, in which we will tell you one game we'll be watching over the next three days, and ways one could creatively reach Blackout City while enjoying the NBA action. So without further ado: Grab a beer, follow the rules, and start the weekend with a Don Nelson-level buzz!

One Game We Will Definitely Drink During This Weekend: Dallas Mavericks vs. Atlanta Hawks

No Regard Daily Recaps: 11-8-10

One Game We Watched This Weekend: Boston Celtics vs. Chicago Bulls

Celtics: 110 Bulls: 105 (OT)

The Celtics squeaked out their second straight overtime victory Friday night in a barn-burner against their Eastern conference rivals, the Chicago Bulls. This game was all about Rose and Rondo, as predicted. The young guards went after each other all evening long and everyone that watched witnessed unprecedented greatness from these budding superstars. I desperately want to see them in a footrace. For me, Rondo's got a quicker first step, but when Rose gets going he might have a Rajon by a hair or two in the open floor. KG's pickpocket of Noah at the end of overtime sealed the deal for a Boston team that is rolling so far this regular season. For Chi-town, there are positives to take away from this game, but the bottom line is that Boozer's hand can't heal soon enough. D Rose needs help offensively and Noah needs help on the glass and defending bigs.

One Game We Didn't Watch This Weekend: Atlanta Hawks vs. Phoenix Suns

Atlanta: 114 Suns: 118

Wow. We missed a good one, huh. Oops.

Bibby's World/Team Dreamin' 2011: Atlanta Hawks

At No Regard, we love basketball. We love the spectacle and strategy of the game, but sometimes the league's lack of imagination confounds and disappoints us. Call us optimists, visionaries, or kids who watched too much Space Jam, but we have ideas. Damn are we gonna share 'em. In this particular instance... Mike Bibby will be sharing his ideas for making the Atlanta Hawks the perfect team going into the 2011 season.

Alright, let's talk. Atlanta Hawks 2011. Eastern Conference Champions. Finals Champions. Rings all around.

You've got the questions; I've got the answers.

How are we going to pull it off? With one simple motto:

Bibby's World: Being A Man

Don't know how we locked this down, but we'd like to introduce you to No Regard's newest blogging sensation... Mike Bibby! He'll be checking in whenever he can, just to remind us: It's Bibby's World, we just live in it!

Hey everyone!

I know it's been (approx.) two million years since I last posted something. I'm really sorry about that. In the interest of full-disclosure, you should know that it's because I'm big into Labor Day. I actually treat it more like Labor Month than Labor Day - a full month reserved for kicking back and not going to work or school. My kids love it more than anything, not having to go to the first couple weeks of class. (Secret: Kids learn less in the first month of school than in any other month, so you might as well use September to hang out with them.) Which brings me to the point of this post: Manliness.

Bibby's World: In Regards to Being Touched

Don't know how we locked this down, but we'd like to introduce you to No Regard's newest blogging sensation... Mike Bibby! He'll be checking in whenever he can, just to remind us: It's Bibby's World, we just live in it!

Today, I would like to discuss the very serious topic of personal space. By now, I'm sure many of you have seen this video that involves the mistreatment of my personal space:

A lot of my fans have asked me, "Mike, what is your problem? Are you homophobic? Do you hate Josh Smith? Do you have a shoulder problem? Is the back of your head as soft as that of a baby?" My initial response is usually, "Ha Ha Ha." As in SARCASM.

But I'm here to put all the speculation to rest.

My problem isn't with male-on-male physical contact. Heck, me and Coach's backyard Airsoft battles usually turn into heated wrestling matches in the tall grass by day's end. And I'll be the first one to say that you're not friends with someone unless you're comfortable with being touched by them. So that's not my problem.

My problem is with rubbing. I don't like being rubbed. I didn't like being rubbed as a baby, I didn't like being rubbed in summer camp, and I certainly don't like being rubbed by Josh Smith and that god forsaken Zaza Pachulia.

So to all you incredible fans out there who got the wrong idea:
Relax - I don't think that Josh is gay or that being gay is wrong. I just think that rubbing is gay.

Bibby's World: The Best Thing Ever by Mike Bibby

Don't know how we locked this down, but we'd like to introduce you to No Regard's newest blogging sensation... Mike Bibby! He'll be checking in whenever he can, just to remind us: It's Bibby's World, we just live in it!

Hey Internet World! It's me, Mike Bibby, making my very first blog entry!

To first address the 500 lb gorilla in the room, I would like to say that getting swept by the Orlando Magic in Round 2 of the playoffs was unfortunate. Not so much in the way of me personally wanting to win the Championship, but the loss has been quite tough on my teammates, so that's no fun. Actually, to be quite honest, I was getting kind of tired of all the games. In my opinion, each game of the playoffs should have a different variation on the sport. So, like, Game 1 is just normal basketball BUT Game 2 is like a round of Horse or Around The World or even Bowling or whatever. If that were the case, I think it'd be a lot less boring. But people are afraid of change, so what's the point in even getting heated about it.

Anyway, since the 'ousting' of my team, as the news media likes to call it, I've had a lot of free time on my hands. Not only that, but since the laying off of our coach Mike Woodson, he and I have had the chance to spend more time together as friends. He's a guy that I've wanted to hang out with for some time now, and let me just say, it's been sensational. Since our game 4 defeat, we've been on a week-long bender of quality time: drinking mojitos in our pajamas, frisbee scrimmages, and playing the Starcraft 2 Beta for literally 16 hours straight. We've let absolutely nothing get in the way of our happiness and have found wonder and amazement in even the smallest of places. Which brings me to the point of this post: The New Dominos Pizza Recipe!

http://www.sogoodblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/Dominos-Pepperoni.png
Wow!

To bring back what I said before about people being afraid of change, I would like to say to those people, "GET OVER IT!" Between The New Dominos Pizza Recipe, touch screen phones and Barack Obama, I think we've proven that change is good! A garlic-herb seasoning, mozzarella with a hint of provolone, and a bolder tomato sauce with a red pepper kick?! ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? Coach and I have eaten, like, a billion of these things in the past 6 days alone. They go great with EVERYTHING, from fishing to just hanging out on a Saturday morning to Ryan Reynolds movie marathons (Van Wilder + X-Men Origins: Wolverine + Smokin' Aces BACK TO BACK TO BACK! I dare you to beat that!).

http://www.celebritywonder.com/wp/Ryan_Reynolds_in_Smokin_Aces_Wallpaper_6_800.jpg
Excellent.

I know some of you are thinking to yourselves, "Mike, are you crazy? It's just pizza!" But I'm not crazy. I'm passionate about a lot of things in my life (break dancing movies, Mr. Pibb, my Zune - THEY'RE BETTER THAN IPODS, PEOPLE!!!, castles, pre-washed jeans, etc.) but the thing that takes the number one spot for me is pizza, and Dominos has found a way to make that thing absolutely perfect. It's not just better, it's PERFECT. Don't take my word for it; try it for yourself! Oh, and uh... You're welcome, World!

I leave you folks with this saying I just came up with:

If you can't enjoy the little things, then there's something wrong with your big picture. Don't be afraid to dream big. But just remember, your dreams will come true if they are small enough!

- Mike

And now, the funniest thing I've ever seen:
