For years, New York and Chicago have fought over the right to the title of Best Pizza City in America. Both sides have their loyalists, and in many ways, it purely comes down to a matter of personal preference. Tonight’s matchup in Chicago is oddly similar to this age-old clash between New York and Chi City pies. Think about it:
The Knicks are not a very deep team. Thin, some might say. Plus, according to urbandictionary.com, “crisp” is a word that the kids use to say “cool.” And as I recently pointed out, Wilson Chandler is pretty darn crisp. Then there’s the whole traditionally Italian aspect—wuttup D’Antoni and Gallinari. Finally, after watching a Knicks game, the viewer sometimes feels as if his or her hunger hasn’t quite been satiated.
The Bulls, by contrast, are one of the deeper teams in the East. That said, they have been known to call themselves out as being a bit soft. The legitimacy of their Italian background must be called into question, as the only real sign we have of any Mediterranean lineage has strikingly red hair. And then there’s that feeling you get after you watch Derrick Rose drive to the lane and acrobatically wrap his limbs around any obstacles in the way, a feeling of being deeply satisfied but almost a little bit sick at the richness of the whole thing.
Pretty uncanny, amirite? From the sound of things, one might be tempted to say that Chicago is the clear winner here. They just have a bit more to work with. But New York’s team, much like its pizza, has the ability to do more with less. All it takes is some cohesion—getting the ingredients to complement each other—and some patience for trial and error. Defeating the Bulls tonight would be a huge step forward in letting the world know that New York is tired of being a basketball Second City and is ready to bring the crown back home, where it so obviously belongs.
Lou Malnati’s be damned.
One Game We Probably Will Watch Tonight, But Not With as Much Enthusiasm: Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Portland Trail Blazers
This game could have been a great city vs. city showdown, too. Look at that picture. How exciting would Sonics-Blazers be in 2010? So exciting! As it is, this should be a pretty competitive game. The Blazers are sitting atop the Northwest Division at 4-1, while KD and the Thunder have gotten off to a surprisingly mediocre 2-2 start after losing their last two. Straight up, they need to move the ball around better. Westbrook is currently leading the team with two assists per game. Two. On a team with Kevin Durant. Come on, boys, let's work the rock a bit. If that doesn't happen, look for Portland to continue scaring the shit out of the Lakers.
Good work with the Pizza picture. I got OKC tonight with KD over 30 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists.
