New York Knicks vs. Boston Celtics
Something's gotta give tonight. And no, I'm not going to be watching the 2003 movie starring Jack Nicholson, Diane Keaton, and Keanu Reeves in which, according to IMDB, "A swinger on the cusp of being a senior citizen with a taste for younger women falls in love with an accomplished woman closer to his age." I'm talking about streaks, baby, either Boston's (ten straight wins) or New York's (eight straight wins). Tonight's epic Eastern Conference clash is perhaps the first Knicks-Celtics game I've witnessed that's had any significance. Both teams are good, finally. As a huge fan of the New York/Boston rivalry, I couldn't be happier. The NBA's version of this northeastern rivalry is exciting! On that note...
Here's what I, as a Celtics fan, have on the line tonight, specifically:
Text message shit-talking rights. One of my friends, who's a Knicks fan, has been barraging my phone as of late with texts like, "Fuck the C's," and "Fucking Celtics are gonna get destroyed tomorrow. Fuck Bastan." I'm hoping that after tonight this will cease and I can respond with something like, "The Knicks suck balls, homie!"
A shot of whiskey. Another Knick fan I know and I have decided to make the game more interesting by betting a shot of whiskey on the spread. I like whiskey on the rocks but I hate shooting it. The guy I'm betting with hates it more than I do.
Blog supremacy. We here at No Regard have a staff that is made up of Knick fans, Nets fans, and Celtics fans (plus one Dallas fan, but fuck the Mavs, bunch of phonies). The Celtics are the current cream of this crop but I don't want to get an email or gchat from Adam Ain't or mugsy2manute saying something like, "Play with us!" or "Knicks rule, mothafucka!" I couldn't handle that.
What all of the attention surrounding this regular season game tells me is that the NBA needs both of these cities to be great all the time. People really care and love these teams. We'll pay attention if the product is worth watching. Let's keep it this way!
As for the game itself, big props to mugsy2manute for helping me analyze this matchup from a purely basketball standpoint. What he pointed out to me in our conversation was the vast difference in both the style and makeup of these two teams. He stated, "Rondo and Big Baby excluded, the Celts are kind of an older team. Half-court offense, pimped defense, bruisers. Knicks are more of the post-modern variety. Run you into the ground, shoot a lot of threes from all over the globe." I couldn't agree more. In simpler terms: we'll be watching one of the best offenses on the league against one of the best defenses in the league. Like I said before, tonight, something's gotta give.
